These were people whose passions started at room temperature and only rarely heated up to lukewarm, people who could be counted on to not fly off the handle, or even raise their voices, no matter how desperate the circumstances. These days we see a lot of memoirs by people with bipolar personalities, but there was an age, before we let Narcissus out for a romp, when the most prominent Americans had antipolar personalities.
